Competing in the 8 rounds of the 2023 FIM World Baja Championships is going to be a demanding and costly exercise, but the support and generosity shown by the people and companies listed here makes it all possible.
We are truly grateful for their support, their vision and their faith in my abilities.
And if you would like to add your name or your business name to this list, there’s more information on how to become a supporter on our Sponsorship page.
SPEEDCAFE.com will be our major partner for 2023.
Speedcafe founder, Brett “Crusher” Murray, has been a driving force behind my motivation to never give up. Brett has transformed Speedcafe into the world’s leading independent motorsports news website.
Speedcafe covered us at Dakar 2021, 2022 and now the 2023 FIM World Baja Championships. Our racing gear and bike graphics are a great standout with the SPEEDCAFE logo as a feature.
Do yourself a favour and grab a copy of Brett Murray’s book, “CRUSHER – You Just Can’t Make That S#^! Up” and find out why this guy has been such a success. And be sure to follow Speedcafe on social media to get all the latest updates.
I first met Dimitri from Aurora Rally Equipment in Greece whilst competing in my first ever rally race at Hellas Rally in 2018. Although the race ended in a very bad way for me on the final stage of the last day, Dimitri and I became great friends, and his company Aurora Rally Equipment is the world leader in manufacturing rally kits for off road and adventure bikes.
Aurora Rally has been supporting me for the past 4 years and for the 2023 FIM Baja World Cup they are building a brand new custom KTM 450 BAJA Rally bike that I will be racing. I’m so excited not only to be on an amazing new bike but to also represent the Aurora Brand.
Adrian and Ang Channing from Channing’s Bottle Yard in Broken Hill and Dareton have been amazing with their advice over the past few years and at this year’s Sunraysia Safari.
Adrian was one of Australia’s top Rally racers alongside Andy Caldecott quite a few years ago. The support from Channing’s Bottle Yard for 2023 will ensure we have a successful year on and off the bike and I look forward to having Adrian alongside me at some of the events in the UAE and Europe. For good reason Channings Bottle yard features prominently on our riding gear and bikes.
Squire Agricultural Services have made a significant contribution to our 2023 program. Bevis and Jen Squire have been close friends for the past 20 years, and Bevis was the first person I met when I bought an old dirt bike and joined the Albury Wodonga Motorcycle Club.
Bevis got me started racing enduros and motocross events and I have learnt so much from him over the years. I would not be racing at this level if it were not for meeting and riding with him. Also looking forward to having him at some events with us this year.
One of the most well-known guys in the Australian off-road racing circles, Rex Fleiter is nothing short of amazing with what he can do remapping a motorcycle ECU. Rex has assisted me with a variety of resources over the past few years and also assisted our Nomadas Adventure Coca-Cola race team with ECU remapping for the Dakar Rally.
My weekly phone calls with Rex always provide me with a new tip or bit of advice that is not available to many other riders. He’s managed to provide me with some amazing – almost unobtainable – suspension that I’m sure will be used to save my ass on many occasions in 2023.
Another long-term friend and riding / training companion. Shaun Walsh has been around bikes a long time and we have spent many hours together on them. Shaun was on board for Dakar 2022 and again for the 2023 FIM World Baja Champs. Hoping to get Shaun over to Hellas Rally in Greece with us for a ride!!
For the 2023 World Baja Champs, Katie and I decided we would do it alone as my Coca-Cola Racing teammate – Pablo – decided to have a year off from racing. This made things a little challenging as the support from Nomadas ADV over the past 5 years has been amazing and they have been our rally racing family.
With SPEEDCAFE.com and AURORA RALLY committing to 2023 we were confident we could make it all happen. But Hernan Samaniego, team owner from Nomadas ADV Coca-Cola Racing Team, called me and confirmed they will provide assistance at any of the events that I need, in particular the Saudi Arabian, Doha and Jordan races.
These events were going to be a huge challenge on all fronts, and I had been worrying a little about these. Now, Hernan will be flying in with me and providing his expertise and mechanical assistance. Katie and I started our rally racing back in 2018 with Nomadas ADV and it’s reassuring to have them with us for 2023.
A chance meeting at the Australian MotoGP with the guys from FuSport has turned into having a great MX Boot supplier for myd training and the 2023 World Champs. Jackson Collins from FuSport has been great and the XP2 Motocross boots are amazing, both comfortable and protective as well as pretty cool looking.
FuSport support a number of riders in Superbikes, MotoGP and also 2 times Dakar Rally Womens winner and Womens World Baja / Rally Champion Mirjam Pol who I look forward to racing alongside in 2023 at the Baja Worl Champs.
A great brand to have supporting us in 2023!
If you ride a bike and have never worn FIST gloves, do yourself a favour and get a pair. I took some FIST gloves to Dakar 2021 for myself to wear as after trying every other brand they were the most comfortable. The moment my teammate, Pablo, put them on he wanted them.
So for Dakar 2022 we contacted FIST and they manufactured custom Coca-Cola Racing / Speedcafe gloves for our team. Now we and many other Dakar riders and teams won’t use anything but FIST gloves. We will have some very special Speedcafe / Aurora Rally Gloves for 2023.
A great homegrown Australian company supporting me again in 2023.
It all started with Steve McDowall when we left for Hellas Rally back in 2018. Steve was in charge of the daily race reports from Hellas and helped us document the fun 30 days in Patras Hospital.
Steve and his wife Christine assist with our website, social media, press releases and daily race updates. Throughout the Dakar Rally Steve was up all night, every night, getting all the info he could gather and working closely with Speedcafe for our updates.
Great friends who have provided great support over the years.
John “Buzz” Sutherland has been around for a very long time and if there is a bike part or accessory that I need, he always makes it happen.
I spend a lot of time at Buzz’s shop talking about bikes and solving the world’s problems in general. Buzz has been my go-to bike shop for the past 20 years and always finds a way to get what I need in time. A longtime friend and supporter.
Alistair Nicoll, owner of LINKFire Australia, is one of the most unselfish people I know. He supported me financially at Dakar 2021 and 2022, and came to DAKAR 2021 as part of our team. I doubt that I would have finished if Alistair had not been there to assist and support me every minute of the race for the entire 14 days, as well as in the lead up and travel back home afterwards.
I owe Alistair and LINKFire so much, and after only being able to complete 5 stages of Dakar 2022 before being forced out with an injury we will be running the LINKFire logos on all of our gear and bikes for 2023 to show our appreciation of his support.
International travel has been my life for the past 5 years and it has been challenging, especially during Covid. Thankfully we engaged Brendon Mahony from Savenio Travel in Albury to handle everything travel related.
I lost count of the times we had to make last minute flight and accommodation changes whilst on the other side of the world, or we were suddenly unable to access a country due to Covid restrictions. Brendon was available 24hrs a day to make changes and ensure we got to our destinations. Nothing was ever too hard for him to sort out. I’m sure things won’t go to plan in 2023 but having Brendon working with us makes everything less stressful.
After losing almost 12kg racing in the Africa Eco Race and not having a very good diet, I decided to get a bit more serious for Dakar 2021. We contacted Karen (Kaz) Plum from Performance Nutrition & Training.
Kaz is not only a certified performance and sports nutritionist, she also has the credentials to back it up – 3 times Miss Australia and 2 times Miss NZ Figure Champion. Kaz also works with V8 Supercar drivers and has a great understanding of motorsport mentality and what it takes to race at this level.
Kaz was one of the few people that could comprehend and understand the injuries I have had and was able to come up with a customised training and dietary plan for me.
I look forward to working with Kaz in 2023 so she can keep me on track and focused on what we need to accomplish.
Cameron Jones from Yield Finance Group in Albury is along for the 3rd year in row to support us. Cam has always taken a genuine interest and followed our racing closely. Cam doesn’t have a motorsport background but is one of the fittest looking “old blokes” I know so it is great to have support from a local legend like him.
For the past 5 years, we have been traveling around the world with our Kriega luggage as well as using some of the Kriega gear at the Africa Eco race and the past two Dakar rallies.
Greg and Raegan from Kriega Australia have been great to us and recently had Katie and I at the MotoGP and World Superbikes with my Dakar bike on display giving me some great exposure and opening some exciting opportunities for 2023. Cant wait to use the new range of Kriega gear in 2023.
Tyres are an expensive part of rally racing. At Dakar we go through $8,000 worth of tyres and mousse tubes each over the 14 days. It may not be a lot compared to car racing, but it all adds up! Coupled with the number of tyres I go through every week training on a variety of bikes, it becomes a very big number over a year.
Italian brand, Golden Tyre, will be my tyre of choice for 2023 and having the support from Golden Tyre Australia will definitely ease our budget.
Manufactured in Norway, Twin Pegs are a revolutionary foot peg providing extra stability, support and a massive energy saving. I have Twin Pegs on all of my practice bikes and will be running them on the new KTM 450 Baja / Rally for 2023. Another world-class product and manufacturer that we will be representing in 2023.
An unexpected call from Rohann Chapman of business consultancy firm 6STEP enquiring about an Aurora rally product for his motorcycle led to him asking “how much does it cost to provide some sponsorship for your 2023 racing?”
Rohann is a keen adventure rider and we have met briefly at 2 events over the past 3 years – one where I was doing a Dakar presentation, and another late-night ride into Rocket Lake at Sunset desert where they were camping for the night.
It’s great to have support from Rohann who has a huge passion for adventure riding and will be undertaking a trip throughout Europe on his KTM in 2023.
I look forward to catching up with him and having him and 6STEP on board with our team at one of the European championship rounds.
